A diesel engine can lose fuel supply in very cold conditions and then appear normal once it reaches a heated workshop.
This makes cold-weather fuel restrictions particularly easy to misdiagnose.
Temperature Changes Fuel Behavior
Paraffinic components in diesel fuel can form wax crystals as temperature falls sufficiently for the particular fuel.
Those crystals can accumulate at the filter media.
The Evidence Can Disappear
Once the vehicle warms:
fuel temperature rises → wax condition changes → restriction decreases
The filter may then appear much less restricted than it was during the original complaint.
Record Conditions Before They Change
Important evidence includes:
- ambient temperature;
- fuel temperature;
- fuel grade/specification;
- filter restriction while cold;
- time until symptom occurs.
A warm workshop inspection cannot fully reproduce a cold operating condition.
Do Not Confuse Wax With Permanent Dirt Loading
Permanent particulate contamination and temperature-dependent wax restriction require different corrective strategies.
