Turbocharger oil leakage is often blamed on internal seals or bearing wear.
However, oil must also leave the turbocharger freely after lubricating the bearing housing.
A restricted drain can change oil behavior even when the turbocharger itself is not the original cause.
Follow the Lubrication Circuit
The path is:
Engine Oil Supply → Turbo Bearing Housing → Oil Drain → Crankcase
If drainage becomes restricted:
supply continues → drain flow falls → oil accumulates in bearing housing.
Common Drain-Side Issues
Depending on the installation, inspect:
- drain tube;
- drain hose;
- gasket alignment;
- carbon deposits;
- tube routing;
- crankcase pressure.
Gravity Drain Geometry Matters
Many turbo oil drains rely heavily on gravity.
A poor drain angle, kinked hose or inappropriate routing can therefore affect oil return.
Why Turbo Replacement May Repeat the Complaint
A new turbocharger connected to the same restricted drain circuit can develop similar oil accumulation.
The diagnostic sequence should therefore check both:
turbo condition
and
turbo operating environment.
