Turbocharger performance is often judged using manifold pressure reported by the MAP or boost-pressure sensor.

Before using that value as proof of turbocharger failure, the measurement itself should be checked.

The ECU Controls What It Measures

A simplified feedback loop is:

Turbocharger → Intake Pressure → MAP Sensor → ECU → Turbo Control

If the sensor reports pressure incorrectly, the ECU can make control decisions based on inaccurate feedback.

Sensor Exposure Matters

Depending on intake architecture, MAP sensors can be exposed to:

  • oil mist;
  • soot;
  • deposit film;
  • intake contamination.

This can affect sensor response on some designs.

Use Plausibility Checks

Useful comparisons can include:

  • key-on engine-off manifold pressure;
  • barometric pressure;
  • idle value;
  • loaded value;
  • physical sensor condition.

A key-on engine-off value that is inconsistent with atmospheric pressure can provide a useful clue, subject to system design.

Why Turbo Replacement May Not Help
