Modern diesel engines can produce a low-power complaint even when major mechanical systems remain capable of normal performance.
The reason may be intentional ECU torque limitation.
This is particularly relevant in aftertreatment systems such as SCR/DEF.
Capability and Permission Are Different
A useful diagnostic distinction is:
engine cannot produce torque
versus
ECU does not permit full torque.
In a derate condition, the engine may still have:
- adequate rail pressure;
- normal boost capability;
- healthy injectors.
The ECU simply commands less usable output.
Why Aftertreatment Matters
Depending on the system, torque limitation can be associated with conditions involving:
- DEF supply;
- DEF quality;
- dosing;
- NOx sensing;
- SCR performance;
- system temperature.
