When coolant appears in diesel fuel, diagnosis should begin by mapping which fuel and cooling-system components physically share a boundary.
Injector sleeves or cups can be one such boundary on applicable engines.
Create a Fluid-Boundary Map
Identify:
Coolant
↓
Cylinder-head passages
↓
Injector sleeve / cup
↓
Fuel passage
The exact architecture varies by engine.
Pressure Direction Can Change
During different operating states:
- coolant pressure changes;
- fuel pressure changes;
- engine temperature changes.
A leakage path can therefore behave differently while running, cooling down or sitting overnight.
Fuel Cooler Is Only One Possibility
A fuel cooler may also provide a fuel-to-coolant interface on certain systems.
If it is suspected, it should be tested appropriately.
But diagnosis should not stop there if the engine also uses injector sleeves that separate the same fluids.
Inspect All Shared Boundaries
A good diagnostic process asks:
